Natural Black hair is damaged by Sodium hydroxide and guanidine hydroxide both of which are highly alkaline products. When applied to the hair, they immediately strip it of all moisture. To combat this, a deep-conditioning treatment is always applied to the hair after the chemical process. This treatment is designed to replace moisture into the hair shaft and to coat the hair strand to make it look shiny and appear healthy. This camouflages the damage, and merely provides the appearance of healthy hair.
Relaxed hair becomes dry, and the hair and scalp must constantly be oiled. This is due to the moisture-stripping process of the chemical relaxer, the use of hot-comb touch-ups, curling irons & flat, as well as, the products normally used to fight dryness (usually petroleum-based products, or "grease") don’t really add moisture to the hair at all. Products with these ingredients simply coat the hair to provide sheen. At the same time, they clog the pores of the scalp so that the scalp can’t secrete its own natural moisture.
In addition to the damage done to the hair by these chemicals, we should remember that the process involves more than simply straightening the hair above the scalp. Chemicals are absorbed through the skin into the tissue, cells, and blood stream. We rub creams and lotions on our skin -- knowing that the skin will absorb them and be moisturized by them. The medical industry administers drugs through skin absorption -- like the patches for smoking, seasickness, and birth control.
It’s time to reconsider the chemicals we choose to use in the search for beauty and perfection. We’ve been brainwashed to believe that we can only be beautiful if we possess long Caucasian hair. We’ve even bought into thinking that black hair either doesn’t grow or doesn’t grow as fast as Caucasian hair. FALSE! Black hair can grow as long and fast as Caucasian hair! All hair grows at the same rate – on average ½ inch per month. The reason that most black women have shorter hair is because of breakage caused by the harsh treatment we subject it to. It’s only a matter of time, that after stripping all the moisture from the hair that the hair will break. The only way to restore it to its natural state is to cut it to remove the damage and restore it.
