Studies Show Exposure to Parabens May Be The Reason For Higher Breast Cancer Risk In Black Women

A recent study by the Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, a non-profit organization, suggests that a toxic hair chemical in hair products for Black women may increase the risk of breast cancer cell growth. They found that parabens, a group of chemicals that prevents mold and bacteria from growing on beauty products, can trigger the development of breast cancer cells.

According to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, “Black women have a 41 percent higher death rate from breast cancer.” One reason for the higher risk in the Black Community may be the exposure to harmful chemicals called endocrine-disrupting chemicals, which mimic the effects of hormones on the body. Many of the products marketed to Black women depend on these chemical formulas to make them work, and are found widely in hair and personal care products sold to Black women.

Nearly all beauty products use preservatives to make them last longer; paraben-free or all-natural hair care products are safer.
